Audience Research Evaluation

Audience Research Evaluation

The first question I asked my audience was of what gender they were of. I made the questionnaire equal by having 10 female’s and 10 male’s this way I would have a clearer idea of the separation by gender if any.

The second question I asked was on which genre/style of music they preferred listening too. Most popular was R&B second was rock then dance and last indie. I was quite surprised by these results as I imagined indie to be a lot higher then rock music but R&B been first did not surprise me when it was most popular.

My third question was if they preferred watching a music video with or without live footage of the band (voyeuristic pleasure). A lot more people answer yes they would prefer to see the band on the video set. I think this is down to the young adults wanting to take after/ replica their favourite bands.

The fourth question I asked was did they prefer a music video with or without narrative structure. The results to this question were quite close but mostly said with a narrative structure which I was surprised at because modern music videos do not normally have a clear narrative structure to them.

My last question was what they would prefer to see in a music video they were watching. I gave them a choice of 4 settings: dancing, Band playing, Beach or Clubbing. The most popular choice was band playing, then clubbing next dancing then finally a beach setting.
These results didn’t really surprise me because of the results from my third question.

Location

first shoot - Monday 21st of january, 1pm
second shoot- 17th of March, 1pm

I had to choose my location very carefully. In the end i chose Bridlington beach because i knew that in the days during the week when i was filming it wouldnt be as busy compared to a weekend also if i chose a more comercial place such as Scarborough it would have been too busy to film on the beach during the day and even on the night aswel.
I wanted to create a happy/fun mood with my video and the lighting made this clearly possible. It was a bright day the second time i filmed so it made this happy/fun mood makeable. All the shots were taken on Bridlington beach.

My Music Video Synopsis

Music video/ story board ideas

Located on a beach using five or six characters. I looked at the music video Faunts ‘M4’ because it was filmed on a beach which is what I want to do for my music video. I got some good ideas of the camera shots for my music video from this one because it used a wide range of camera shots and fast paced editing. I don’t want to use shots that last longer then 20 seconds because they will be too long for my synchronization to go with the beat of my song. I wanted to try and write the lyrics of the chorus to my song in the sand but this will be hard to get the song and timing right in with the beats of the song while writing in the sand. The music video by Coldplay ‘Yellow’ was also very helpful because it was filmed on a beach in Liverpool and used lots of weather shots all the way through the music video which looked very effective. There is a main character in the ‘yellow’ music video too which is what I would like to include in my video but with a few more characters. I want to start my music video off with an extreme close up of a girls eye and slowly zoom out to make sure you know that the character is on a beach by filming the sea in the background. My music video will not include voyeuristic pleasure because I am not having characters/artists singing or miming anything in the music video and would rather have a video which has so narrative structure because my audience research showed that that was the most liked type of music video. My music video will be a bit like a short film but with no narrative structure to it.

Release me - Agnes

Agnes - Release Me

verbal language is used in this music video as wel as non verbal. It is genrated in a way that the target audience will understand it, also through body language and mannerisms. Voyeuristic pleasure is used in this video as Agnes is featured oin the video herself.

Produced by AATW (All Around The World). released in march 2009.

The target audience for this video is aimed towards young adults mainly because alot of the music video is set in a clua which would obviously appeal more to young adults.

The genre is reflected in the mise-en-scene for example, when the artist is in the club on the music video this is putting across to the audience that the music genre is dance or R&B.

The camera shots in the release me video are not fast cutted or montarged. it does include voyeuristic pleasure due to having the artist in the video itself.

Show me love - Micheal Mind

Michael mind – Show Me Love

This music video is of the same genre of mine also similar lyrics. The language he uses in these lyrics is definitely referring to personal experience, for example ”Heartbreaks and promises I've had more than my share”
A lot of the language used in the video is informal. The lyrics do relate to the video well due to the background set in the video synchronizing with the beat of the song.

distributed by sony, BMG.

The video is 2 minutes and 41 seconds long, in this time the video it shows a lot of editing and special effects in the background of the video aswel as 2 different women dancing whcih creates a sexual kind of atmosphere towards the audeience and men. There is alot of editing in this video uncluding texts on screen and added colours to contrast with the women dancing in the video.

The video does not really relate to the lyrics but i think this is becuase its a dance song. i htink the video is trying to put across something about single women wanting a relationship.

The target audience for this video would definately be young adults/students and maybe middle aged people.

Armand Van Helden

Armand Van Helden

Born February 16th 1970 in boston Massachusetts, an America record producer, remixer and DJ.

His biggest commercial success came from his remix "professional widdow" released on East West records, it reached number one in 1997 in the UK.
"His own record "you dont know me" was released in 1999 and also reached number one in UK. Armand Van Helden's music is definately only one genre, house music.

Armand Van Helden was one of the best-kept secrets in house music. He took up a DJ residency at The Loft, a top Boston nightclub at the time. He released his first official single, a mix of Deep Creed's "Stay On My Mind" through Nervous Records.Van Helden joined such names as Todd Terry, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Masters at Work and George Morel to record scores of club hits. By the late '90s, a clutch of crucial remixes and several albums made Van Helden's name as one of the most popular producers around.

conventions of a music video

lyrics:
normally create a general feeling/mood/ sense of subjects rather then meaning.

Music:
tempo influences the editing.

Genre:
can be reflected in types of mise-en-scene/themes/camera or editing style. has own music style/icongraphy.

Camera:
makes the meaning obvious. The Angle and shot distance all play a part in the representation of the artist/band.

Editing:
fast cutting montage it normally most popular also depending on genre but can fit more action into the video when using this technique. Making many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewing, so ensuring numerous viewing. This offers different kinds of pleasure for the audience. (Voyeuristic pleasure)
